Adult Class Q&A (Every class is online)

Class size

We need at least 6 students to offer a new class and 5 students to continue an existing class. Adult classes usually have 5 to 10 students, and the maximum number in a class is 12. We do not accept new registrations once we have 15 students enrolled. Instead, we will put you on a waiting list and will contact you before the next semester begins.

Textbook

We use Korean Made Easy for Beginners. You can buy it through amazon.com. We use the textbook for the first 2 years. For beginning level 1 class, online material will be fully provided. So, you don’t need to buy the textbook, but we want to let you know the first part of the online material for the Hangeul, Korean alphabet, is the same as the one in the textbook.

Placement and moving on to the next level

If you do not know how to read and write Korean, your level is beginning class 1. Usually, we spend 5 weeks learning the Korean alphabet, Hangeul. So, if you already know Hangeul and are able to read and write Korean, you can join the class in the 6th week. We recommend that you contact Soran, adult class coordinator, for your placement beforehand. Also, students should meet certain requirements before moving on to the next level. You will be given more specific information about this on the first day of school.

Class time

We usually meet on Saturdays, and classes last for 2 hours. Class time varies depending on the level but usually starts at or after 8:30 a.m. and ends before 3 p.m. For example, one class is from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and the other class is from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Please check with your teacher for the exact class time. One semester consists of 14 or 15 weeks, and we offer classes in the spring and the fall. No classes are held in the summer except a couple of group tutoring sessions upon request.

Tuition

We charge $330 for each semester, but beginning Korean level 1 has some special features. Tuition for level 1 is $340. If you want to take a 6 week-Korean alphabet class first and then decide whether to continue or not, you can pay just $150 first. If you want to continue, you will have to pay an additional $210. We offer a 100% refund 3 days before the first day of school, a 50% refund through the third week of school, and no refund after that. The tuition is due one week before the first day of school. We accept checks (payable to OKUMC-OKS) and you can send money via Zelle (oks.transaction@gmail.com).

Students who cannot find an appropriate class

Sometimes students don’t feel their level fits any of our classes. If you think your level is in between two classes, you can take both classes and pay an extra tuition of $150 as long as the class times don’t fully overlap. Please talk to one of our teachers about your level and preference in advance.

First day of school

Spring semester usually starts in January and fall semester in August. Please refer to our website for the exact starting date for each semester.

Tutoring

If there are not enough students to offer a new class, our teachers can offer private tutoring. Please email Soran, adult class coordinator, at soranmin@naks.org for more details.
